Madeira is a paradise for hikers, but beyond the famous trails like Pico do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo or 25 Fontes, there are magical, quiet paths where you can feel the island’s soul. Here are three lesser-known hikes that will make you fall in love with Madeira all over again.

1. Levada do Alecrim – Waterfall Heaven in the Highlands

Start point: ER105 parking near Rabaçal

Length & duration: 7 km round trip, 3–4 hours

Highlights: dense laurel forest, serene levada path, Lagoa da Dona Beja waterfall.

Insider tip: extend to Lagoa do Vento for a circular route.

Day route idea: Morning hike → picnic at the lagoon → afternoon swim in the natural pools of Porto Moniz.

2. Caminho Real do Paul do Mar – Down to the Sea on a Royal Road

Start point: Prazeres village

End: Paul do Mar

Length: 1.8 km, about 1 hour

Highlights: cobbled historical path, terraced cliffs, ocean panorama.

Insider tip: walk downhill only (Prazeres → Paul do Mar), then enjoy seafood and a dip in the Atlantic.

Day route: Hike in the morning → lunch by the sea → visit the goat cheese farm in Prazeres on your way back.

3. Vereda do Jardim do Mar – Cliffside Trail Between Two Villages

Start point: Paul do Mar or Jardim do Mar

Length: 3 km one way, about 2 hours

Highlights: coastal cliffs, ocean views, peaceful atmosphere.

Insider tip: go in the afternoon for sunset in Jardim do Mar – finish with a Poncha at Joe’s Bar.
